Advice for students studying Subject CA2 for the 2017 exams

Details of the CA2 Practical Exam can be found on the IFoA's website.

Recent changes

In March 2015 the CA2 exam was split into two parts and the eligibility requirements (requiring students to have passed all the CT subjects before taking CA2) were removed. However, we would recommend that you are familiar with at least some of the CT subjects before you attempt CA2.

Course Notes

ActEd has produced course notes which we recommend you use in your preparation.  These include sections covering:

  • the principles required for analysing data, developing a model, creating an audit trail and presenting results
  • advice on using software and exam technique tips
  • a detailed worked example and a sample marking schedule
  • the syllabus and background reading
  • aims, further reading and useful checklists
  • example spreadsheets, audit trails and summary reports
  • self-assessment questions and projects.

Course Notes are available in printed format (spiral-bound) and as an eBook, which can be purchased as an addition to the printed product or as a stand-alone product.

Here are some samples from the Course Notes:

The Course Note samples are in Adobe Acrobat format, and you will need the latest version of Adobe Acrobat Reader to view and print it. If you don't have Adobe Acrobat Reader, you can download it here.

You may also like to use one of ActEd's Marked Assignment Projects to help you prepare for the CA2 course.

Data files for the Worked Example in the Course Notes

We have presented a Worked Example in Section 10 of the Course Notes. This section includes the instructions for a Paper 1 and a Paper 2 project and a full analysis of a set of solutions produced by a student attempting them under exam conditions.

If you want to try these projects yourself "hands-on", rather than just reading through the student's solutions we've presented, you can download a spreadsheet containing the data. (If you are using the 2014 Course Notes please use this spreadsheet.)

Face-to-face and Online Tutorials

We also offer a Preparation Day (delivered face-to-face or live online) designed to help you pass the CA2 exam. The preparation day builds upon the CA2 Course Notes. It will help develop the required documentation skills and technical Excel knowledge needed to pass Subject CA2, using an exam-style question as a case study.

We offer the choice of an online or face-to-face course. Computers will be provided on the face-to-face course for you to practise the key skills required.

An Online Classroom is also available, which acts as either a valuable add-on to a face-to-face tutorial or a great alternative to a tutorial, particularly if you're not based in the UK or near a tutorial venue. Please click here for more details.

Please view the Tuition Bulletin to see the courses on offer. Full details of the application process can be found here.

Marked Assignment Projects

In addition to the tutorial support for CA2 we offer two sets of Marked Assignment Projects (MAPs), called MAP A and MAP B. These projects give you an opportunity to practise assignments of a similar standard to the ones you will face in the CA2 Paper 1 and Paper 2 practical exams.

MAP B is ideal for those students who are retaking and have already sat MAP A or for those sitting the exam for the first time who want extra practice.

The projects will require you to produce a model in a spreadsheet (using MS Excel), an audit trail and a summary (using MS Word). You will need to download one spreadsheet for each paper.

Marked Assignment Project A:
Download file for Part 1, download file for Part 2.

Marked Assignment Project B:
Download file for Paper 1, download file for Paper 2.

In order for ActEd to mark your assignments in good time we recommend that you email your project to us in Word and Excel formats at least 4 weeks before your exam. We will mark your script and return it via email, providing useful feedback to help to ensure that you are successful when you take the Exam. The assignments must be submitted before the final deadlines to ensure you receive your script back in time for the exam.

Refunds & Expiry

Please refer to our Terms and Conditions for details of our refund policy.

The marking expires 12 months after the date of purchase. Assignments submitted after this date will not be marked.
